Dear ACT Sportclubs
I write on behalf of the Save Big Splash Community Group. We are a team of youth-led volunteers campaigning to preserve the Big Splash swimming pool and slides in Macquarie. See us on Facebook, Instagram and in many recent newspaper and media articles.
Our Save Big Splash petition has received a tremendous response with over 3,000 online signatures in the first week. This is the fastest growing petition in ACT’s history, and we confidently expect it to achieve a record level of support when it closes on 24 February.
It is my pleasure to invite you to the Save Big Splash Public Community Meeting on Thursday 19 February, 6:00–7:30 pm, at the Fred Daly Room, Labor Club, 51 Chandler Street, Belconnen. The meeting will hear information and suggestions for the future of Big Splash from:
- Yvette Berry ACT Minister responsible for aquatic facilities
- David Pocock ACT Senator
- Jo Clay Gininderra MLA
- Peter Cain Ginninderra MLA
- Dr Caroline Luke-Evered ACT Coalition of Aquatic Pool Users & Urban Swimmers
- Lachlan Butler Belconnen Community Council
- Alena Sarri Aquatots (original Big Splash family)
- Amelia Tattum Save Big Splash community group
We have requested Minister Berry and Ginninderra MLAs to provide a clear statement of their party’s policy position on the campaign’s priorities:
- Whether the ACT Government should take back the lease of the Big Splash site?
- Retention of a 50-metre outdoor pool in any future development
- Retention of water slides in any future development
- Retention of lawns and green space in any future development
Following these inputs attendees will work in small groups to surface suggestions for the future of Big Splash. We will collate and share these after the meeting. We are targeting 200 attendees at the meeting and look forward to your participation. Tickets are available via Humanitix.
We would really appreciate it if you could support this campaign by notifying your members about the petition and by displaying the attached posters in your clubhouse.
Kind regards,
Amelia Tattam
Chair, Save Big Splash
