Belnorth Football Club

News & Updates

Welcome to the new year and we hope everyone has had a great Christmas. Our thoughts are with all the people that have been impacted by the recent and ongoing bush fires.

With the smoke and the poor air quality that has been around Canberra since December 2019, the Committee made a decision to cancel the Junior Preseason Program for 2020.

Registrations for the U10 - U18 grading are now open.

We have yet to hear the official start date for Juniors but we expect it will be near the first weekend in May.

The first round of Seniors is expected to be played in the first week of April 2020.

Belnorth Grading (U10 - U18)

For the 2020 winter season grading for U10 - U18 will be on Saturday the 15th of February 2020 at UC oval 5.  There will be an independent group doing the grading for BNFC.

Players who do not register with BNFC, will not be able to grade on the day.

Please note the first 20 minutes is to ensure that players have been checked in and a bib number has been provided. The preference is for parents to drop their children off, check them in and then leave them with the independent group as this will help the children to do their best at grading.

  • U12 (boys and girls) 8.00 am - 9.30 am
  • U11 (boys and girls) 9.30 am - 11.00 am
  • U10 (boys and girls) 11.00 am - 12.30 pm
  • U13 & U14 (boys and girls) 1.00 pm - 2.30 pm
  • U15, U16 & U18 (boys and girls) 2.30 pm - 4.00 pm

All players must be registered to play at BNFC from U10 - U18 age groups before they attend the grading process. Players who do not register or attend the grading session will be placed in a team of the lowest division for their age groups.

Players who do not wish to grade and want to play football, please nominate the players that you would like to play with for the 2020 season.

The grading process is critical to ensure that each player is placed in a team where they will have opportunities to enhance their football skills in a competitive environment according to their development needs.

For existing, new players, coaches, referees and volunteers please register at PlayFootball.

BNFC recommends that players are graded in their age group as it helps the players develop their skills and gain confidence. Players should not be grading at higher age groups.

If you have any questions about grading please email The grading policy for 2020, can be found at the link below.

Working with Vulnerable People

A reminder that all coaches, managers and volunteers are required to have a Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) card. For more information on how to obtain a WWVP card, go to the WWVP page at Access Canberra. It is FREE for volunteers. The ACT Government will be conducting spot inspections from April at both training nights and on game days. It is important that your WWVP card is with you at all times.

Belnorth Developing Junior Coaches

One of the aims for Belnorth in 2020 is to develop junior coaches from Belnorth players. The aim is to develop these juniors coaches, where they will be able to coach teams U6 – U9. There will be a mentoring program with senior coaches.

For this to work, Belnorth still requires parents to be Managers and support these junior coaches. Belnorth will invest in coaching courses and ensure that these junior coaches are accredited.

We are also fortunate to have Esperance Anderson, who started as a junior coach, volunteering to be a mentor for our junior coaches:

"My name is Esperance Anderson and I have been associated with Belnorth – playing and refereeing – for 15 years. Despite my age – 19 years old – I have also been coaching Junior Football for the past seven years; which is where many may recognise me from.

Even from a young age I have always respected and looked up to my coaches, who have had such a major influence on my choice to be a coach as well. I began coaching when I was 13, when one of my younger brothers was in an U6’s team, after watching my Mum coach him the season before. Just watching the enjoyment and teamwork of the players throughout that first season as a coach was a major boost for me to continue for seasons to come; despite the early mornings."

If you are interested in being mentored in the 2020 Winter season then please contact me on

Belnorth Developing Junior Referees

One of the aims for Belnorth in 2020 is to develop junior referees from Belnorth players.

Referees are a crucial part of the game. Belnorth has a long history in developing referees, including 2006 FIFA World Cup Referee Ben Wilson.

Matthew Willington is the Referee coordinator for Belnorth and the focus for 2020 is to mentor and support current and new game leaders.

Refereeing offers a great opportunity to build an understanding of the game, stay fit, develop confidence, earn pocket money and even get you to the World Cup.

If you are a junior player who loves the game, looking for a first job, or a parent who spends plenty of time running the line and wants to be involved, then refereeing is for you!

Capital Football offers two different entry level courses.

  • Game Leaders for children aged U13 & U14, refereeing U8 - U 11
  • Level 4 referees for those who are 14 years of age +, refereeing full field matches (U 12 - U 18)

Please go to if you are interested in becoming a referee.

If you have any questions, please contact the Referee Coordinator Matt at
